SOCIAL CAPITAL INITIATIVE
FILLING THE SOCIAL CAPITAL GAP
Community Services League fills the social capital gap by providing connections to knowledge and resources. Connections that help people handle the hardships they face today and look beyond the model of dependence - nurturing hope for tomorrow.
The challenge for those living in poverty
Life in poverty is more than just a lack of financial capital. It is also the result of a lack of social capital for people struggling to get by. Social capital is the combination of all the connections we have. Connections to people who can provide know-how and experience, as well as access to resources that can help us overcome challenges in life. People in poverty often do not have good connections and relationships. This lack of support makes it more difficult to handle hardships.
Coaching
CSL provides one-on-one support to people in poverty. It may be helping them navigate the complex system of getting assistance. Or, connecting them with mentors and resources to help them handle whatever challenges they face. Through coaching, they have an invaluable advocate on their side.
Family Stability
Challenges in life can affect a parents’ ability to provide a stable home environment and can cause children to struggle in school. CSL offers housing-specific counseling as well as connections to other services to improve family stability – from employment issues to understanding budgeting and more.
Circles USA
Circles USA pairs people in poverty with volunteers who share experience and knowledge about landing a job, negotiating a lease, managing debt, and more. Their successes and challenges are shared with local leaders to address the barriers that keep people in poverty.
Alliance Building
There are many organizations fighting the good fight against poverty. Unfortunately, these efforts are not always aligned. CSL works with the programs sponsored by faith communities and civic groups, collaborating to help streamline the delivery of resources and services. And ensuring greater impact for those in need.
