Who We Are

Building Stronger Families and Stronger Communities

Community Services League is a nonprofit organization serving neighbors throughout Jackson County, Missouri.

We help people meet immediate needs while working alongside them to build greater financial, housing and employment stability. Rather than addressing one challenge in isolation, CSL looks at the complete picture and helps each person create a practical path forward.

Every neighbor’s situation is different. That is why our work begins with listening, building trust and connecting people with the combination of resources, coaching and encouragement they need.

Our Mission in Action

Help for Today.
Hope for Tomorrow.

Stability is rarely created by solving only one problem. CSL combines immediate assistance with long-term coaching, practical tools and supportive relationships.

Help for Today

Food, housing assistance, utility support, transportation help and other essential resources give families room to breathe and help prevent a difficult moment from becoming a deeper crisis.

Hope for Tomorrow

Career training, financial coaching, housing services and ongoing support help neighbors increase income, build assets and create greater stability for themselves and their children.

Real people, real transformations. These are the stories that inspire our mission.

Our History

A Small Group Started
Something Extraordinary

CSL’s story began in 1916, when twenty young women in Independence came together to help neighbors who were sick, struggling or living in poverty. Among them was Bess Wallace, who would later become First Lady Bess Truman.

Their belief was simple: when neighbors care for one another, communities become stronger. More than a century later, that same spirit continues to guide CSL.
