Community Services League works alongside people as they build greater stability, opportunity and financial security.
Since 1916, CSL has served communities throughout Eastern Jackson County and the Kansas City region.
Our approach starts with listening. We look at the whole picture, build on each person's strengths and connect them with resources, coaching and opportunities that can help them move forward.
That means housing, employment, financial wellbeing, food, family stability and community development aren't treated as separate issues — they're part of one connected path toward stability.

Support with rent, utilities, homelessness, affordable homeownership and creating a safe, stable place to live.
Employment
Career coaching, job connections and tuition-paid training that help people increase income and create opportunities for advancement.
Financial Wellbeing
Coaching and practical tools that help neighbors manage money, improve credit, reduce debt, build savings and create assets.
Food & Basic Needs
Food pantries, meals and emergency resources help families meet immediate needs while creating space to focus on what comes next.

What Happens When Support Connects
They didn't need one program. They needed a path forward.
Jamikaa and Shannon lost their home, living in temporary housing and unsure of what would come next. Homelessness, transportation challenges and financial instability while trying to build a better future for their children.
CSL didn't treat those challenges as separate problems. Coaches connected the family with career training, transportation support, financial coaching and housing — removing barriers as they worked toward their goals.

Something Extraordinary
CSL’s story began in 1916, when twenty young women in Independence came together to help neighbors who were sick, struggling or living in poverty. Among them was Bess Wallace, who would later become First Lady Bess Truman.
Their belief was simple: when neighbors care for one another, communities become stronger. More than a century later, that same spirit continues to guide CSL.
